The origins of this town go back to the ancient Roman period. Approaching from the sea in the 1st century BC, the bay of Portoferraio appeared guarded by two luxurious Patrician villas: one at sea level, and the other at the summit of the "Grotte", a promontory overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast.
